DESIGNING LANGUAGE CLASSROOM TO EMERGE STUDENTS’ BETTER ATTITUDES: SOCIAL-AWARENESS, SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND PRIDE
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/472

Education is a process to build one’s character. However, most of language lecturers commonly focus their instructions on the teaching method/technique to teach language skills. In fact, character building still becomes an “unconsidered” aspect in practice. Consequently, the teaching of language is not providing knowledge of life, but only knowledge of the language rule. Shortly, the teaching of character in language classroom remains “untouched”. To face ASEAN Economic Community, certain attitudes are indisputably needed to support the condition. This paper attempts to discuss how language classroom is designed to facilitate students emerge their better attitudes. Three kinds of attitudes: social awareness, self-confidence, and pride will be discussed deeply and the way to emerge the attitudes will be explored and elaborated comprehensively.

SUPPORTING EDUCATORS TO FURTHER DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ WRITING THROUGH TALK FOR WRITING APPROACH
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/499

It is a must for educators to overcome several problems dealing with teaching writing. We have to
consider the students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). They are not as good as the native
speakers in writing and are not as fluently as the native speaker in speaking. Thus, the educators
must scaffold the learners. Moreover, educators must provide the material and prepare the classroom
to make the learners absorb the material. This research attempt to find out how Talk for Writing
approach can support educators in developing students’ writing in junior high school level. Teacher
can come up with daily oral retelling, asking the learners to read the example, guiding them to make
temporary writing, and finally, giving them opportunity to set up the permanent writing. The
educator’s role is as the facilitator and motivator. By doing so, the learners will learn step by step
and learn several skills as well.
Keywords: Talk for writing approach, teaching writing, and scaffold.

CULTURAL VALUES STRUGGLE IN “PERJUMPAAN MALAM” SHORT STORY BY H. USMAN HERMAWAN, M. PD.
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/511

Cultural transition is a necessity. The form of the transition can be seen as social practice, one of it
through narrative discourse. Narrative discourse is the result of active interaction between objective
social classes with linguistic habitus by social agent. In the context of social practice, narrative
discourse and “interest” is inseparable. When an author describe a concept, the author do not simply
choose the word but, consciously or not, the author select the dictions with assumptions, values, and
ideology that was attached in the word. The purpose of these study are to get an objective description
of doxa, the arena of cultural values struggle, and habitual practice in “Perjumpaan Malam” short
story. The method used in these study is the qualitative method through critical discourse analysis
approach. The data resource is the text of “Perjumpaan Malam” short story by H. Usman Hermawan,
M.Pd. published in Horison Online on February 4
th
2014. The data collection done by intensive
reading method, while data analysis done by social function paradigm. The result of the study are as
follows. The doxa in “Perjumpaan Malam” short story is the necessity of globalization. However,
the society need to preserve the local values because globalization does not always correspond with
Indonesian culture. The arena of cultural values struggle are the global, local, religion, and gender
equality arena. The habitual practice was done by punishing people who violate local values,
punishing people who violate religious values, as well as lifting the values of gender equality.
Keywords: Culture Values, Struggle, Short Story

LEARNING METHOD SELF DIRECTED LEARNING BASED OF ICT: USED GAME ANDROID CHARACTER FOR INDONESIAN LANGUAGE LEARNING
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/513

In Indonesia, the game is still a flagship icon compared with teaching materials, especially in the
culture of the city. The city's cultural community is characterized by (1) orientation to the future life;
(2) More rational, pragmatic and hedonistic; (3) Cherish the time; (4) Working with calculating and
careful planning; (5) Communication mostly relies on the use of communication technology
equipments; (6) It takes less time to do chores; (7) Following the pop culture or something that are
famous; (8) Professionals in the work; (9) Tend to be individualist; (10) Tend to follow the western
culture: hedonistic, materialistic and pragmatic. Indonesian learning is still dominated by the
perceived saturation of most students and university students in Indonesia. Assumptions that arise
because the school or campuses have not been able to implement sustainability learning, fun and
renewable. And then, the use of the learning method SDL (Self Directed Learning) in learning
Indonesian implement learning systems independently. Learning system independently can develop
students and university students actively. Active learning will make students more familiar with the
material that they obtained. In this learning, Android Game Characters can be given to the children
in kindergarten. They can get through the game to learn how to read. For teenagers in high school
to university students, they can get through vocabulary games and Indonesian vocabulary. Then, to
meet and follow the rapid global flow Self Directed Learning method with the use of ICT-based
Learning Android Game Characters in learning Indonesian worth checking out and implemented by
educators (teachers or lecturers) in Indonesia.
Key words: Self Directed Learning, ICT, Android Game, Learning Indonesian

THE PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: AN APPROACH TO OPTIMIZE COMMUNICATION ABILITY OF THE AUTISTIC CHILDREN
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/518

The communication barrier is a disorder condition that is often found among the autistic
children. Therefore we need an approach to optimize the communication ability of the
autistic children. PECS is very effective to help the autistic children to communicate and
to control their emotions. PECS can be used as a starting point to build the interactions
during the instruction both between autistic students and their teachers, and between thier
classmates and the environment more effectively.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a unique alternative
communication intervention method for individuals with autism. It is an approach to
practice communication ability using non-verbal symbols. PECS is primarily an attempt to
stimulate the children’s communication ability spontaneously. The use of visual language
instead of verbal language is an initial mediation effort towards the communication process
appears to be more complicated. The process of visual communication in turn triggers
verbal expressions. PECS can be considered as efforts to provide visual stimuli. The
process can be done in several phases. In the first phase the children are introduced to the
non-verbal symbols. The different phases show the ability levels and the children’s
development.
To apply PECS , it is required to use a behavior modification. By using the behavior
modification, it will be covered up the children desire. The objects desired will enforce the
children to communicate through the pictures exchange, in which in the final phase the use
of PECS approach makes the children motivated to speak.
Keywords: communication, autistic children, PECS

THE CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION OF THE SCHOOL TO INCREASE INDONESIAN LANGUAGE SKILLS OF LEARNERS (A CASE STUDY IN SMPN 3 SUMBAWA BESAR)
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/512

This study focused on the identification of the problem based on the English four skills that is
reflected in the aspects of the competency and performance. The problem is assessed through
elements of the school culture by using interviews, observation, and document analysis. Problem
identified is the lack of ability to speak for Indonesian learners. SMPN 3 Sumbawa reviewed based
on competence and performance aspect because of less optimal contribution of school culture based
assessment elements.. As for the data collection methods used were interviews, observation, and
document analysis.
Based on interviews, the problems found were closely linked to the element of stakeholders. Such
as the lack of commitment of the head master to control the continuity of programs that support the
promotion of Indonesian language skills at school, teachers who are less competence in the
profession to develop theater activities, and students who do not commit to follow the programs
implemented due to financial constraints and their other activities at the same time. Based on the
observation of the problem , the linguistic competence and performance of learners were not optimal
because of insufficient input because they are dominantly affected by the use of the mother tongue
(Sumbawa language) in their daily life interaction. Based on the results of the analysis of the
problems found was also related to the layout and location of SMPN 3 Sumbawa that was
unfavorable. SMPN 3 Sumbawa location just next to the market and current trade activity and the
noise of passing vehicles sounds when learning Indonesian take place in the classroom.
Consequently, it affects the learners’ focus on the material being taught; the absence of laboratory
infrasrtucture aspect of supporting an increase in the ability to speak Indonesian; furthermore, a
vision which is reflected in the learning program has not been implemented optimally and by
seventeen development of the character values are closely linked to improved language of
Indonesian ability althought implementation is still very minimal.
Keyword: school culture, the ability to speak Indonesian, learners, SMPN 3 Sumbawa

http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/545

This paper concerns at brief descriptions about how the implementation of parliamentary debate is
able to improve the students’ speaking ability. However, many students find speaking as one of the
most difficult skills in learning English. Therefore, parliamentary debate appears as a solution to
enhance the eleventh grade students’ speaking ability in Azizstan Foundation School Pattani
Thailand. Meany (2002: 6) mentioned that Parliamentary Debate teaches sophisticated skills in
extemporaneous speaking, critical listening, critical thinking, research, and presentation. The theory
above is also supported by a study result of analyzing students’ speaking ability in the class that has
conducted towards eleventh grade students of senior high school which consists of 30 students.
The findings revealed that compared to the first cycle, the students are able to deliver their arguments
effectively by using their notes as a guidance to elaborate more arguments, point by point in the
second cycle. All in all, it can be concluded that Parliamentary Debate is able to significantly affect
the overall performance of the students’ speaking ability.
Key Words: Parliamentary Debate, Speaking Ability

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AT EARLY CHILDHOOD
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/522

Language development is always in line with the growth of the child. Parents should always pay
attention to these development, because at this time, largely determines the learning process. This
can be done by giving a good example, to motivate children to learn. Parents are largely responsible
for the success of children's learning and should always strive to improve the potential of children
in order to develop optimally.
In view of its function, language is the ability to communicate with others. There are significant
differences between the understanding of language and speech. ISLAMIC SPIRITUALITY AND SOCIO-CULTURAL EDUCATION: PESANTREN OF NAHDLATUL WATHAN
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/523

Education is one of the runways of human development in the life of a nation, state, and religion. It is
an integral part as an effort to improve people's life both spiritually and socio-culturally. Religious
education, specifically, has also been dedicating itself as an important part in the development of human
civilization. One form of the real contribution is the establishment of a religious based education system
called pesantren. Any kind of boarding school education has improved a lot. One of them is Nahdlatul
Wathan (NW) on the island of Lombok and Sumbawa (Nusa Tenggara Barat-NTB). NW as an important
part in the development of today's society has made itself as an Islamic-based education dominated the
balance of spirituality and socio-cultural. This study aims at describing the domain associated with the
continuum between aspects of spirituality with the socio-cultural context of society. It is expected to be
a scientific reference for the development of education-based Islam, both for internal purpose of
Nahdlatul Wathan Boarding School and externally across the country. MOTIVATING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES OF SUCCESS FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNERS: THE PHENOMENON OF EXTROVERT AND INTROVERT INDONESIAN LEARNERS
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/524

This paper is based on the assumption that we need theories that discuss about how successful foreign
language learners learn in a classroom, what they have done in the process of learning and why some
foreign language learners can rapidly increase their competence in learning foreign language while
others cannot. Individual differences play an important role during this process. This paper focuses on
the discussion about such phenomena from psychological perspectives. In so doing, it focuses on the
differences among learners themselves, especially from their personality. Psychologically speaking,
language learners are different in terms of how they deal with the process of learning and how they
approach the learning process. Both of them can be differed from their personality. Extrovert and
introvert will have different way dealing with the process of learning. With regard to extrovert language
learners, they usually tend to be active (talk more) in learning process. On the contrary, introvert learners
usually tend to passive in answering or asking during learning process but can still be mentally active.
Keywords: introvert, extrovert, introvert and extrovert learners, foreign language learners.

PARENTS’ PARENTING CONTRIBUTION IN CHARACTER EDUCATION
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/525

Building positive character can be developed through value habituation, either in social or religion
which internalized through social interaction. Character that has been formed is expected to be
firmly entrenched and become life principal in children’s life. In this context, parents become the
main persons in charge of the process of building the character of children. Parents should be able
to be a good role model because most of children’s time is spent in the family. Good model and
habituation become a fundamental step in character education. A shift in social values is started to
frequently happen. Matters which were taboo, now becomes a normal thing. Corruptions, teenagers’
mini dress phenomenon, exaggerating dating style, married by accident, until teacher which had
been killed by his/her students, and student imprisons his teacher.
Nowadays, split of personality is happening, where individuals have not yet able to unite between
words and deeds. Shyness culture seems to be eroded. Therefore, parents’ parenting is hoped to be
able to shape children’s character, so that they have strong mental which always consider values as
their guidance and life principal, not only knows but also able to implement it in daily life. Thus,
those are democratic parenting style, not permissive parenting style or even authoritarian parenting
style. Various aspects, such as family, school, society, and government are necessary to be
synergized in order to success the character education.
Keywords: character education, family, parenting style

CHARACTER EDUCATION AS THE PLACE FOR SHAPING THE MORALITY OF CHILDREN OF THE NATION
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/526

Character education in various schools in Indonesia has received attention, and even becomes
priority. However, how far can the character education be designed as integrated part in formal
education? This paper discusses about the importance of learning character building as a part of
character education in formal education system. Character education has been well-arranged to build
a good individual character. Nevertheless, in the implementation, design, and application of the
program has not really covered all the children yet, either at home or at school.
In this case, we need to pay attention and analyse how important character education in curriculum
as one of the main subjects. It has been done by book expert; however, there is still something
deviated from children’s behaviour either in school or in the society even though teacher has
revealed his or her maximum teaching skill with hope that it can develop well.
Nowadays, education problem is not only a planned and conscious effort to establish learning
condition and learning process inside the room. Education is not only a mere interaction through
electronic media so that children actively develop their potential to have a power in moral, self -control, and even creativity inside themselves, society, and nation. Thus, it brings significant
influence to the development of the students in order to develop a good character, dignified and
enrich the life of a nation. It is necessary to be re-examined through team as one of the efforts to do
continuous improvements.
Keywords: character education, personality

http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/531

Teaching a language especially teaching English as Foreign Language cannot be separated from
occurring the problems. An English teacher should be wise to overcome problems in teaching
English since it involves some aspects that need to be handled carefully for the sake of the success
of teaching learning process. Effective techniques are really needed and even they are “more
important” than the material itself. The present study investigates the techniques the teacher uses (1)
to negotiate meaning with the students, and (2) to cope with the learners’ errors. The study is
descriptive study. It is held in Senior High School. It involves regular teaching learning process in
English class in eight meetings. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The
result shows that there are some techniques dominantly used and categorized effective among the
techniques implemented by the teacher. Further discussions on findings are elaborated and
suggestion will also be recommended.
Keywords: Teaching technique, communication, negotiate meaning, learners’ errors

THE EFECT OF RQA-COMBINED TPS ON THE BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ RETENTION IN GENETICS SUBJECT AT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH JEMBER
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/532

The teaching and learning strategies applied in Biology Department at University of Muhammadiyah
Jember are mostly lecturing.. This method, said to be one of the conventional methods , is also
applied in Genetics course. This method has not been proven to be effective in optimizing the
abilities of the students to have good thinking skill as one of the life skills should be acquired yet.
As a proposed solution, a more students-centered approach, constructivists, is offered to invite more
participation of the students during teaching and learning activities. Applying active learning
strategies and constructivist causes students actively involved in learning. Material learned can be
meaningful and retention of students increased. The strategy offered is the Combination of Reading,
Questioning and Answering (RQA) and Think Pair and Share (TPS). The combination of these two
is to train students to read, formulate questions, and provide answers, and discuss with their peers
or groups on the material being taught. The problem of the study is to find out how significant is the
effect of Reading, Questioning and Answering (RQA) and Think Pair and Share (TPS) toward
students’ retention on Genetics course. The research design applied in the study is quasi -experimental design. It is aimed at giving the real description on the effects of students’ retention.
The population of the study are the two classes of fifth (5th) semester students of Biology
Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Jember. One class is treated as the controlled group
which applied think, pair, and share strategy, and another one is of the experiment group which
applied the combination of reading, questioning and answering strategy and think pair and share
strategies. The results of the study show that the average retention of the students of the experiment
group is higher than those of the controlled group. The average corrected score on learning strategies
combined TPS and RQA are 9.6% higher compared to learning the TPS.
Keywords: RQA, TPS, retention

Here the writer takes Serat Dewaruci as his preference because there exist the event and the
multicultural education learning in it. As it is told in Serat Dewaruci, the King decendant, firstly,
Wrekudara can not speak polite Javanese (kromo and kromo inggil), but after finding the Dewaruci,
he can speak polite Javanese and even talk by using expressions. Many of the expressions talked are
the idiomatic expressions. That is why, the writer introduce it further to the reader with the title: “An
Analysis on Category Changing Process of Javanese Idiomatic Expressions Used in Serat
Dewaruci”.
The problems of the present study covers: What are the idiomatic expressions found at the third part
in Serat Dewaruci? In writing and composing this paper, the writer has a purpose, that is analysing
the category changing process happened to Javanese idiomatic expressions those are used in Serat
Dewaruci. The study was qualitative in which the data was in the form of corpus of text. The data
collected were consulted them to the experts, whether the collected data were correct or not. After
the data had been collected, the selection of the data were done to choose the accurate data given by
the informants. Furthermore, the step in data analysis is analyse the word changing of the idiomatic
expressions by applying the process of the category changing.
From this analysis, it is found that there are 2 kinds of idiomatic expression categories. They are:
the idiomatic expressions those are as phrases, and the idiomatic expressions those are as sentences
or clauses. Finally, the writer suggests that the Javanese youth have to take care this Javanese literary
work, especially the Javanese song, because it is difficult or even impossible for the other country
literary work to influence the Javanese one. The writer also suggests that this paper can be used as
the comparative analysis for further research.
Keywords: Expressions, idiom classification, category changing

INDONESIAN LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGY FOR FOREIGN SPEAKERS CONTAINING LOCAL CULTURAL WISDOM
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/535

Language has an important role in communication as well as diplomacy between nations. Awareness
of the importance of language in cultural understanding between countries is what has been behind
the rise of Indonesian Teaching activity for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) both inside and outside the
country. Based on the data from the Center for Strategy and Development of Cultural Diplomacy
(PPSDK), in 2016, targeted 80 BIPA teachers will be sent to various countries. Nearly 46 countries
around the world, both in higher education institutions as well. These developments are triggering
the birth of a number of studies about the BIPA's. The issue of learning does have a strategic role in
BIPA program. In an effort to develop the language and build resilience culture then one of the
strategies that can be used is to make BIPA has insight into local cultural wisdom. Local cultural
wisdom can be used as reference for the essential and strategic in developing teaching materials with
a variety of approaches. Local cultural wisdom will build two resiliences at the same time, the inside
and outside, both for teachers and learners.as embassies and consulates general of Indonesia in
various countries have held BIPA program.
Keywords: BIPA Program, Teaching Material, Local Cultural Wisdom

READING IN CONTENT AREA ACROSS THE CURRICULUM
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/536

Reading across the curriculum can be defined as a key competence in the curriculum. It means that
students read the text in order to help them to organize thoughts, construct the meaning, and
communicate the information and ideas contained in books or electronic text, as well as revealing
knowledge across the curriculum.
Content area reading is to read and understand the information on a particular subject. It includes
the definition of science in social studies, history, civics, laws and mathematics. To read the related
field of content not only reflects on the concepts and necessary ideas to the subjects, but also the
structure of the text that is used to read the content area of the study.
Reading and writing are two important things have to be trained in all levels of education. Therefore,
it is important to design the integration of reading to all content areas of the study. Integrating needs
to be planned in college or school level. In fact, the problems occur at the school level in which
teacher still experiences problems in integrating the content area reading of study. The difficulties
caused by lack of knowledge onreading. Moreover, the teacher still considers that teaching reading
is the responsibility of language teacher.
Various problems of learning reading should be handled immediately. Since, reading skills are
important at all levels of education from a primary level to college which relates to reading activities.
Hence, integration of reading is needed in all content areas of study.
The use of reading strategies for all content area of the subjects needs the support from experts of
universities who understand the concept of reading strategies which can be used for reading learning
in the content areas of study, namely KWL PLUS, The DR -TA (Directed Reading and Thinking
Activity), Read Aloud, and Retelling. The use of the strategies can be taught by lecturers to students.
In addition, it also can be trained to the teacher of the study by reading experts.
Keywords: Reading, Content Area, Strategy

QUALITY ASSURANCE STRATEGIES: TYPOLOGY AND OUTCOMES-BASED TEACHING INNOVATION EXPERIENCES IN SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/537

Quality assurance has been a global quest for institutions of higher learning. In the Philippines, the
Commission on Higher Education (CHED), has designed a new strategy, an approach geared toward
developing competent and high-level human resources and generating knowledge and technologies
needed for advancing the country’s national development and competitiveness. This study presents
experiences of three academic institutions of higher learning in Southern Philippines in its
implementation of the new quality assurance strategy; present the quality assurance framework of
the Commission on Higher Education; discuss the innovative instructional strategies (Outcomes -Based Education) mandated by the quality assurance framework; describe the experiences of three
Southern Philippines universities; and, present personal analysis of the realizability of the quality
assurance framework. The quality assurance framework includes the categorization of the
institutions of higher learning as University, Professional Institution and College, all with their
corresponding nature and tasks in the educational process. It is in the fulfillment of their tasks that
they could be sustainable as higher education institutions. Further, quality assurance mandates the
shift to innovative teaching strategies known as the Outcomes Based Education in which outcomes
are the indicators of quality. The outcomes are classified as Institutional Graduate Outcomes,
Program Outcomes, Course Outcomes and Learning Outcomes. Based on the experiences of the
three institutions whose implementation are being studied, there are difficulties experienced because
the change necessitates the matching shift in instruction, in the policies and behavior of faculty.
However, despite the difficulties, generally, the schools are slowly making the quality assurance
framework work in their schools.
Keywords: Innovative Teaching Strategies, Quality Assurance, typology, Outcomes-Based
Education

THE INTRODUCTION TO MATH FOR CHILDREN IN EARLY AGES
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/539

An early age (0-6) years is a golden period. This is the right time to provide stimulation to optimize
all aspects of children development. The aspects of children development that is in questions are:
moral, cognitive, motor, language, social, emotional, and art. All of those aspects need to be
developed for early childhood education, and one of them is cognitive development consisting of
the concept of shapes, sizes, and patterns, a concept of numbers, symbols of numbers and letters that
can be introduced through playing math.
The introduction of mathematics is very important for children in early ages. Many everyday
problems, even a very simple matter requires mathematical calculations such as, shopping, counting
objects, counting time, locating, counting distance, and counting speed. Early childhood education
teachers need to master simple math concepts that are appropriate for children in their early
childhood. The strategy to introduce simple math needs to be understood in order to train children
to count and use other mathematical calculations.
In order to introduce math for children in early childhood, forms of activities are geared towards the
development and characteristics of children i.e. by playing. Teacher introduces mathematics by
using fun activities and using concrete media. For children in 5-6 years old, their cognitive
development is being switched at a pre-operational phase to concrete. At this stage, children learn
best through presence objects. Children will easily remember things, numbers, and characteristics
even though it was not appeared in front of him. The introduction of mathematics was expected in
the various aspects of child developments, especially cognitive development in which it can be
developed optimally.
Keywords: Introduction to Mathematics, Early Childhood Education, Early Ages

ELT CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT: FROM IDEOLOGY TO DESIGN
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/540

This paper discusses the process of developing a curriculum in the contexts of English language
teaching (ELT). It argues that curriculum developers/designers need to move from outlining the
ideology before establishing the curriculum design. The ideology refers to the nature of knowledge
or skills that the students are to develop upon completing the course of instruction, while the design
refers to a set of procedures carried out to establish the nature of the instruction. To maintain both
practicality and applicability, this paper provides an example of curriculum development. The
example deals primarily with developing a curriculum of academic English writing course in a
certain higher educational context in Indonesia. Although the example deals primarily with the
development of a curriculum of a particular course of instruction in a certain educational context,
the principles underlying the development, however, is relevant to the process of developing a
curriculum in general.
Keywords: curriculum development, ELT curriculum, academic L2 writing

http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/529

One of the capabilities that must be owned by a math teacher is a mathematical communication skill.
Mathematical communication is the mathematical ability of students to convey ideas, perceptions,
and the mathematical solution to others. Mathematical communication in this research refers to the
ability to express mathematical ideas through oral, written, and visually demonstrate and describe
it; the ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate mathematical ideas, either or ally, in writing, or
in other visual forms; and the ability to use terms, notations of mathematics and its structures to
present ideas and describe relationships with models situation.
This research describes the ability of mathematical communications of Mathematics Education
students of Muhammadiyah University of Jember in the material Pythagorean Theorem. Results
from this research showed that when expressing mathematical ideas through speech, writing,
demonstrating, and describe it visually, S1 express it clearly and completely but often has errors.
Whereas when they understand, interpret, and evaluate mathematical ideas, either orally, in writing,
or in any other visual form, S1 is doing it right, clear, and complete. When using the term, notation,
mathematical structures to present ideas and describe relationships with models other situations, S1
used in full. But not in terms of truth and clarity. On the other hand, when expressing mathematical
ideas through word of mouth do the obvious but it is not tr ue and clear. Whereas when they
understand, interpret, and evaluate mathematical ideas, either orally, in writing, or in any other visual
form, S2 has been doing it right, clear, and complete. Furthermore, when they use the term, notation,
mathematic structures to present ideas and describe relationships with another situation models, S2
does not do it correctly, clearly and completely.
Keywords : ability of mathematical communication, students in mathematics education

THE EFFECT OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING STRATEGY COMBINED BY JIGSAW TOWARDS CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/546

The current problem of education is that students are less trained to develop their thinking
capabilities. This is because teachers still consider giving information is more important than
training the ability to think. One of the learning strategies that can train students to be able to learn
independently and train high-level thinking capability is the Problem Based Learning strategy
combined Jigsaw. The research aims to know the effect of Problem Based Learning strategy
combined by Jigsaw towards critical thinking ability in the tenth grade students of Senior High
School in Jember district. The research design was quasi-experiment. Pre-test and post-test non-equivalent control groups design was implemented. The population of this research is all of tenth
grade students of senior high school in Jember in the academic year 2014/2015. The sample of this
research is the students of 10
th
Natural Science (IPA) 3 class as the control group, and then 10
th
IPA
1, 10
th
IPA 2, and 10
th
IPA 4 as the experimental group. The technique of collecting sample was done
by using simple random sampling. The data was taken by giving essay test. Moreover, the
Hypothesis of the test was using Anakova’s formula. Before doing the hypothesis test, normality
test was implemented by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov Anakova’s formula, and the homogeneity test
was carried out by Levene’s Test formula to know whether the distribution is normal and
homogenous. Thus, based on the data analysis result and discussion, it can be concluded that result
of Anacova test showed that the critical thinking ability has p value = 0.729 bigger than α = 0.05,
which showed that learning strategy did not exert any influences towards critical thinking capability.
Keywords: problem based learning, jigsaw, critical thinking

ENGLISH ORAL COMMUNICATION MATERIAL FOR MIDWIFERY STUDENTS
http://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/IECO/article/view/547

Teaching material is one of the important components in the process of teaching and learning. Its
appropriateness is an absolute demand to achieve the success in obtaining the maximum input of
knowledge.
The instructional design models used in the designing of teaching material are adopted from those
of Dick and Carey (2005) as well as Borg and Gall, (1983). The result of English Oral
Communication Material for midwifery students has specifically set as follows: Snapshot,
Conversation in Context, Grammar Focus, Word Power and Video Viewing. The topic in every unit
is set in chronological order based on the procedures of midwife work and the activity in every sub -unit is oriented for speaking which is preceded by various activities which apply CLIL approach and
are supported by some learning theory such as behaviorism, constructivism, modeling, questioni ng
and exercising. Hence, the final teaching material is regarded to be good enough, for this teaching
material has filled the existing gap of English speaking learning needs which later on it can assist
the midwifery students who are projected to work at international maternity clinics and hospitals in
local or foreign countries.
Keywords: Teaching material development, oral communication, Dick and Carry Instructional
Design, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
